Artist FAQ
How do I get my art on your cans?
We have an open Call for Art is always open an independent panel of curators goes through the submissions to select the pieces for our next series of labels.
How do you pick the art on your cans?
Every time we create a Call for Art, we assemble a panel of creatives (non-Collective Employees) from the beer, spirits, art, and music worlds to curate the submissions and choose what art will go on our beer.
Do you accept artists that reside outside of Canada and the US?
We absolutely accept artists from anywhere in the world for that matter! To date we’ve featured artists from over 41 countries!
You don’t own rights to any of my artwork right, including submissions?
First things first, we want to promote you and your work. You own all rights to your work. We are simply looking for you to grant us the rights to feature your art and promote you as an artist.
Can I submit an existing piece or does it need to be something new?
We encourage artists to submit pieces they’ve already done because we respect the time and effort it takes to create something new.
Are you picking the beer our artwork ends up on, or do we get to choose?
All the artwork for our call is selected by a third party panel of jurors, and then gets assigned to a beer that seems best suited for your work by our creative team. Artists do not get a say on which beer their artwork will appear on if selected.
GUIDELINES & RESTRICTIONS
Is there a limit on the number of pieces I can submit?
While we don’t technically have a limit on submissions, we ask that artists choose their top 3 favourite pieces per call, just to keep things manageable for our jurors.
Is there a specific theme or guidelines to follow when submitting?
Our submissions are wide open – we occasionally will have a call asking artists to submit art to a specific theme or direction, but in that case we would make a specific call.
We recommend avoiding text as it may create brand confusion.
Liquor laws prohibit us from featuring any images depicting smoking or drugs, so we won’t be able to present it to our third party panel of jurors for review. The submitted Artwork must not contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content.
I am underage, can I still submit for your Call for Art?
Unfortunately, we do have to abide by Ontario liquor laws, which prohibit us from using artwork that has associations with children. This means we can’t accept artwork from those under the legal drinking age in Ontario ( or where you reside), or any artwork that features children in it’s imagery.
What is the duration of use for my piece should it be selected?
We will print your artwork on labels, (bottles and cans), coasters and promotional materials for no more than 18 months. After the 18 months is up we will not print your artwork on any of our products or on its own in any format.
EARNINGS
Do you pay the artists on your cans?
Every artist chosen for a can is paid $250USD and maintains ownership of their work.
We encourage artists to submit pieces they’ve already done because we respect the time and effort it takes to create something new. We also work with artists on additional paid opportunities and feature them through a profile on our website, social media and through our marketing initiatives.
How do artists get paid?
We process payments via PayPal. We ask that all artists we work with have a PayPal account for quick and easy payments.
PREPARING & UPLOADING YOUR ARTWORK
What format should I be submitting in?
The minimum should be 1800 x 1800px but the higher the resolution the better. In order to be formatted onto a can, submissions will most likely have to be cropped into a square, but you are welcome to submit in a different size and if it gets selected we can go from there!
Is there a limit on the number of pieces I can submit?
While we don’t technically have a limit on submissions, we ask that artists choose their top 3 favourite pieces per call, just to keep things manageable for our jurors.
Can I submit 3 dimensional artwork?
While we don’t have any restrictions on the types of artwork you can submit, 3 dimensional or sculptural pieces can be a bit tricky. A can isn’t necessarily the best medium to highlight your work.
Do you only accept digitally-created art?
We accept all types of art! We will accept high-resolution scans of physical pieces, just keep in mind the minimum 1800×1800 pixel dimensions and acceptable formats: RGB .jpgs and .pngs.
Do you accept photography submissions?
We do! We work with 500px for specific Calls for Photography, but we do also accept photographs in our general Call for Art. I would encourage you to submit, without the use of a filter. Please make sure that the photograph is evenly lit, and focuses on your piece without any background clutter (unless you’re making a composition photo).

A couple things that may be the culprit; are you uploading from a phone or tablet? Our website works best from Google Chrome on a computer. If that doesn’t do the trick, try clearing your cache! If you’ve already done these steps and it still isn’t working for you, please send your submission to artists@collectiveartsbrewing.com, and our Artists Liaison can upload them for you on the back end on our website.
I’m having trouble creating an artist profile, what could be the problem?
